2024 Mendenhall Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship Recipient Announced

Chloë Glover, a Department of Geology and Environmental Science Ph.D. Candidate in the Dietrich School has been awarded the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mendenhall Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Glover will be working with the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center on the project titled Integrated geophysical and structural analysis to identify 3D critical mineral resources and tectonic context of NE Washington.

Growing up in Western Pennsylvania as a preacher’s kid with a mild hearing impairment came with its challenges, Pitt Associate Professor of English Shannon Reed got by with books and a keen sense of humor. Her love of reading and droll wit are amply demonstrated in her entertaining new book, “Why We Read: On Bookworms, Libraries and Just One More Page Before Lights Out.’’

Dietrich School Staff Member Recognized for Costume Design

Brittany Graham, assistant manager for Pitt Stages’ costume shop, was recognized for costume design work at the Swedish International Film Festival.

Graham worked on “Unsinkable,” a film by Cody Hartman that recounts the inquiry into the sinking of the Titanic. She’s previously worked in the costume department on various TV projects, including “Outsiders,” “The World Wars” and “The Men Who Built America."

Dietrich School Faculty Member Honored by AAAL

Amy Williams, professor in the Dietrich School's Department of Music, is among four composers to receive a 2024 award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (AAAL). The $10,000 prize acknowledges artists who have arrived at their own voice. Williams will also receive an additional $10,000 grant to fund a recording of her work, which will also be presented during a spring concert at the AAAL library.

Dietrich School Historian's Award-Winning Book Tells Very Personal Story

When Alaina Roberts, associate professor in the Dietrich School's Department of History, was a sophomore at University of California, Santa Barbara, a professor’s assignment on race and creating a family tree sent her on a quest that ultimately resulted in, “I’ve Been Here All the While,” a book that has been described as a “lovingly personal narrative” by the Journal of Southern History and “a well-timed and welcome read [that is] hard to put down” by the Journal of African American Studies.

Dietrich School faculty members Bridget Keown and Ben Rottman have been named winners of the 2024 Tina and David Bellet Teaching Excellence Award.

Keown, a teaching assistant professor in the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Program, and Rottman, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, will be formally recognized during a dinner in April.

Two Dietrich School Advisors Receive 2024 Ampco-Pittsburgh Prize

Dietrich School faculty members Jaclyn Kurash and Andrew Lotz have been awarded the 2024 Ampco-Pittsburgh Prize for Excellence in Advising. 

For nearly 20 years, the Ampco-Pittsburgh Prize has been given to outstanding academic advisors at the Dietrich School and the College of General Studies. This award is funded by the Fair Oaks Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Ampco-Pittsburgh Corporation. It was established by Robert Paul, Chairman Emeritus of Ampco-Pittsburgh and an emeritus trustee of Pitt.
