GES Professor Awarded Funding through NASA's Solar System Workings Program

The Dietrich School congratulates Pitt’s two 2024 Goldwater Scholars: Oluwatofunmi Abiola and Richard Fang. This prestigious award celebrates college sophomores and juniors who are intending to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering.
On Monday, March 25, the Dietrich School and the College of General Studies held the annual Undergraduate Student Awards reception, recognizing graduating seniors in the Dietrich School and CGS for accomplishments within and beyond the classroom.
Part-time instructor in the Dietrich School’s History Department, Anthony “Tony” Novosel was just voted best professor by Pitt students. The Pitt News hosts its annual “Best-Of” surveys and Novosel was this year’s best-of amongst the faculty. Dr. Novosel has been working at Pitt since 1989 and most recently in 2023 he was appointed as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his contributions to peace in Northern Ireland. The Pitt Momentum Funds are a collaboration between the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Research and the Office of the Provost and support researchers and scholars in fields from creative arts and humanities to the social sciences, to STEM and the health sciences.

The Pitt Cyber Accelerator Grant Recipients for Spring 2024 have been announced and include two Dietrich School Faculty.
The Saveetha Transdisciplinary Annual Research Summit – MEDSTAR Summit has invited Dr. Anthony Grace, a Distinguished Professor of Neuroscience in the Dietrich School to be their guest of honor for the upcoming third annual summit. The summit will be from May 6 to 11 2024 at Saveetha Medical College and Hospitala in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
The MEDSTAR Summit showcases research on the latest inventions, innovations, and implementation of advanced science in day-to-day life.
Chloë Glover, a Department of Geology and Environmental Science Ph.D. Candidate in the Dietrich School has been awarded the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mendenhall Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Glover will be working with the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center on the project titled Integrated geophysical and structural analysis to identify 3D critical mineral resources and tectonic context of NE Washington.
Growing up in Western Pennsylvania as a preacher’s kid with a mild hearing impairment came with its challenges, Pitt Associate Professor of English Shannon Reed got by with books and a keen sense of humor. Her love of reading and droll wit are amply demonstrated in her entertaining new book, “Why We Read: On Bookworms, Libraries and Just One More Page Before Lights Out.’’
Brittany Graham, assistant manager for Pitt Stages’ costume shop, was recognized for costume design work at the Swedish International Film Festival.
Graham worked on “Unsinkable,” a film by Cody Hartman that recounts the inquiry into the sinking of the Titanic. She’s previously worked in the costume department on various TV projects, including “Outsiders,” “The World Wars” and “The Men Who Built America."
