When Alaina Roberts, associate professor in the Dietrich School's Department of History, was a sophomore at University of California, Santa Barbara, a professor’s assignment on race and creating a family tree sent her on a quest that ultimately resulted in, “I’ve Been Here All the While,” a book that has been described as a “lovingly personal narrative” by the Journal of Southern History and “a well-timed and welcome read [that is] hard to put down” by the Journal of African American Studies.

Dietrich School faculty members Bridget Keown and Ben Rottman have been named winners of the 2024 Tina and David Bellet Teaching Excellence Award.
Keown, a teaching assistant professor in the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Program, and Rottman, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, will be formally recognized during a dinner in April.
Dietrich School faculty members Jaclyn Kurash and Andrew Lotz have been awarded the 2024 Ampco-Pittsburgh Prize for Excellence in Advising.
For nearly 20 years, the Ampco-Pittsburgh Prize has been given to outstanding academic advisors at the Dietrich School and the College of General Studies. This award is funded by the Fair Oaks Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Ampco-Pittsburgh Corporation. It was established by Robert Paul, Chairman Emeritus of Ampco-Pittsburgh and an emeritus trustee of Pitt.
Sunil Saxena, a professor in the Dietrich School's Department of Chemistry, has been recognized with the 2024 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring.
The Provost's Award honors outstanding mentors who substantially impact students seeking research doctorate degrees.
Each year, the Pitt office presents up to four awards, including a $2,500 prize to the graduate faculty member responsible for training the next generation of researchers. The prize is in its 19th year.
Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences alumnus, Zhen Liu has received the 2024 Sloan Research Fellowship. Zhen graduated from Pitt in 2015 with his PhD. There are 126 researchers who are awarded this fellowship each year. It includes a 2-year $75,000 fellowship to advance research. Liu is now an assistant professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota.
Gayle Rogers, Andrew W. Mellon professor and chair of English, and Dietrich School Special Liaison for Outreach and Development, was interviewed about crypto currency for a story on a Bitcoin scam happening in Pittsburgh.
Fernando Tormos-Aponte, an associate professor of Sociology in the Dietrich School had his research on the growth of science advocacy, specifically with climate change, referenced in a recent Nature article.
