Women's History Month in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences Celebrates: Dr. Emily Elliott

Dr. Emily Elliott is an advocate of sustainability, diversity, and inclusion in the geosciences. She is a professor in the Geology and Environmental Science Department in the Dietrich School in addition to running the Pitt Isotope Tracers Lab which aims to explore the impact of humans on the environment. She is also the co-founder and emeritus director of the Pittsburgh Collaboratory for Water Research, Education, and Outreach. The Collaboratory, run through the University, connects efforts in water research and local governance.

Before working for Pitt in 2007 she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the United States Geological Survey, Division of Water Resources. 

Dr. Elliott is trained as a Science Ambassador through the “Science and Engineering Ambassador Program” with the National Academies of Sciences and is an Advancing Science in American Foundation Scholar.  Her advocacy for sustainability has led her to become a member of the Faculty Sustainability Task Force within the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation at Pitt. Through her research, she has been awarded several National Foundation of Science Grants and she has won numerous awards including an NSF CAREER Award, Hydrologic Sciences (2013), the American Geophysical Union’s Sulzman Award for Excellence in Education and Mentoring (2018), and the Carnegie Science Environment Honorable Mention award (2013, 2017).

Dr. Emily can be found on campus teaching one of several courses on geochemistry, biogeochemistry, and ecosystem ecology.
