Five Dietrich School Undergraduates Named Boren Scholars

Five Dietrich School undergraduates are the recipients of 2018 Boren Scholarships. Congratulations to rising senior Emily Bucklen, and seniors Megan Harris, Juules Van Leusden, Olivia Peters, and Cian Stryker.

Emily, an Air Force ROTC cadet from Ligonier, PA (Russian major, political science minor, Russian and Eastern European Studies certificate), will study Russian in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Megan, from Allentown, PA (’19 B.A. in Political Science, minors in French and Japanese, certificates in Global Studies and Asian Studies), will study Japanese in Kyoto, Japan. Juules, from Reading, PA (’19 B.A. in Chinese and Political Science, certificates in Global Studies and Asian Studies), will study Mandarin in Taipei, Taiwan. Olivia, from Chambersburg, PA (’19 B.A. in Classics and Religious Studies, certificates in Global Studies and African Studies), will study Swahili in Arusha, Tanzania. Cian, from Marietta, OH (’19 BPhil in Political Science and International and Area Studies--Russian and Eastern European Studies track, minor in Classics), will study Farsi in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. 

The Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests.
