The “Responsibilities of Department Chairs,” as detailed under Chairing the Department, will be the focus of the Dean’s annual evaluation of a Chair’s administrative work. In the evaluation of their performance as a faculty member as well as department chair, the Dean relies on the annual Summary Statement in which each Chair is asked to outline all of his/her activities for the past year in the areas of teaching, research, and service work, including lecture invitations and other forms of outside recognition.
Although some of the duties listed in the “Responsibilities of Department Chairs” are delegated to individuals or committees by the Chair, this does not alter the fact that the Chair is ultimately responsible for how well these tasks are carried out.
