Armin Schikorra, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research

Armin Schikorra

Armin Schikorra is a Professor in the Dietrich School’s Department of Mathematics whose research lies at the intersection of geometric analysis, harmonic analysis, and nonlinear partial differential equations. His work is motivated by problems arising in the geometric calculus of variations, particularly harmonic maps between manifolds and their local and nonlocal generalizations. A central focus of his research is regularity theory, where he combines geometric ideas with tools from harmonic analysis, including commutator estimates and compensation phenomena, to study the behavior of solutions to geometric partial differential equations and related questions in quantitative topology.

In addition to his research and teaching, Schikorra plays an active role in the mathematical community. He co-initiated the Pittsburgh Mathematical Horizons Lecture Series and is involved with the University of Pittsburgh's PDE and Analysis Seminar. He recently served as the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics.

Schikorra's research has been supported by an NSF CAREER Award and an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship. Before joining the faculty at the Pitt, he held research positions at the University of Freiburg, the University of Basel, the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig, and ETH Zürich. He received his Habilitation from the University of Freiburg and earned both his PhD and Diplom in Mathematics from RWTH Aachen University.
