Alumna janera solomon Awarded 2021 Dietrich School Distinguished Professional Achievement Award


On Friday, November 19, the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences recognized janera solomon (A&S ’98) with a Distinguished Professional Achievement Award. This award recognizes alumni and alumnae who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the University of Pittsburgh’s legacy of excellence.

janera is a curator, producer, and nonprofit executive. She is recognized for her passionate commitment to creative and cultural expression as powerful tools for dialogue, collaboration and social change. As a leading cultural strategist, janera has been sought out by visual artists, independent spaces, museums and performing arts centers such as the Museum of the African Diaspora (San Francisco), Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Ministry of Tourism in Ontario.

For over a decade, janera served as the executive director of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater which saw expansive growth under her leadership.

Prior to receiving this award, janera was named as one of the “50 Most Powerful People in Pittsburgh” by Pittsburgh Magazine, “Pittsburgher of the Year” by the Pittsburgh City Paper, and a “Woman of Influence” by the Pittsburgh Business Times.

janera generously contributes her knowledge and expertise through service on boards such as the Carnegie Museums, The Ellis School, and the Dietrich School’s Board of Visitors.

For these reasons and more, Dean Kathleen Blee was honored to celebrate janera, and to present her with the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professional Achievement Award.
