Instructor Recruitment to Freshman Programs
As a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh, you have the great opportunity to enhance the educational experience of students who need it most—freshmen. Join the Office of Freshman Programs and over 80 faculty and staff members from 20 departments in helping these students make their transition to college a smooth and successful one.
Introduction to the Arts and Sciences (IAS) is a course that seeks to introduce students to some of the academic issues they will find important like the transition to college; academic integrity and professional behavior; academic skills and services; the value of a liberal arts education; developing relationships with faculty; and educational goals. An instructor's manual is provided with articles, activities, and suggestions about how to present these topics with relevance to the average 18 year old. In addition, each instructor is matched with an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) who is eager to assist in the creation and implementation of these topics.
During the summer, instructors attend a workshop of approximately two hour and a half hours, which provides additional information, teaching suggestions, and the opportunity for discussion with experienced instructors.
Introduction to the Arts and Sciences (IAS) courses meet one hour a week from late August until around the third week of November. (There is also approximately an hour of preparation with the UTA each week.) All classes are located in Thaw Hall adjacent to the Office of Freshman Programs. Each class is assigned a section of CourseWeb, which includes some materials from the instructor manual, which students can access.
