Frequently Asked Questions: Freshman Programs
Will I have the opportunity to participate in free out-of-class activities with other freshmen?
Freshmen have a number of different ways to take part in out-of-class activities arranged by the Office of Freshman Programs. The Office of Freshman Programs arranges several free Freshman Events and Freshman Lectures, as well as providing tickets and access to other Special Events arranged outside of our office. Also, individual Freshman Seminar classes plan their own out-of-class activities.
When should I sign up for a freshman event?
Registration for freshman events usually begins two weeks before the event. To sign up, see the Freshman Programs receptionist in B-4 Thaw Hall. Remember to bring your Pitt ID and a $10 refundable deposit. You'll get your deposit back on the night of the event. Freshman events are free, but because space is limited, no-shows lose their $10 deposit.
How do I find out about events?
To find out what freshman lectures and events are scheduled, and how to register for them, call 412-624-5759 or e-mail Russ Maiers.
Am I required to take Introduction to the Arts and Sciences classes offered through Freshman Programs?
Participation in Introduction to the Arts and Sciences and Freshman Seminars is voluntary, but the courses are very valuable!
How can FP courses benefit me?
FP courses offered in the fall term assist freshmen with the transition from high school to college academic and social life and the culture of the campus and the city of Pittsburgh.
How do I register for an FP course?
See your academic advisor during PittStart. You must be an Arts and Sciences freshman to register for these classes.
