Introduction to Personal Computers and the Internet
(3 Credits)

This course is for students who want to become computer literate. It is designed to develop computer skills necessary for college and beyond. The main objectives of this course are to utilize software packages for word processing, spreadsheets, slide presentations, graphic animations, and converting file types; operate various computer systems beyond Windows for the PC; design your own Web page for the World Wide Web; and access the Internet to retrieve information and make use of various Internet search tools. Prerequisites: none.

The grade will be based on labs, homework assignments, and two tests (midterm and final).

The recommended text for this course is Computer Applications and the Internet: A Laboratory Approach to Computer Literacy, by Novacky and Khalifa.

Section I: PC: Windows and Application Programs

Lab 1. Introduction to Microsoft Windows (the basics of Windows)
Lab 2. Windows application programs
Lab 3. Word processing with Microsoft Word (an introduction to word processing)
Lab 4. Working with spreadsheets: Microsoft Excel (an introduction to spreadsheets)
Lab 5. Creating slide presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint (creating a presentation)
Lab 6. Working with database: Microsoft Access (create, modify, query a database)

Section II: UNIX and World Wide Web Applications

Lab 1. Introduction to e-mail and Text editors in UNIX
Lab 2. Working with UNIX basic commands and file system
Lab 3. Basic HTML: Building your first Web home page
Lab 4. Creating tables within a Web page
Lab 5. Working with frame design on the Web
Lab 6. Creating image maps with a Web page
Lab 7. HTML forms and CGI/script for data collection

Section III: Internet Applications

Lab 1. Connecting to remote computers: Telnet, PuTTY, SSH-Client
Lab 2. Transferring files on the Internet : FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
Lab 3. Drive Mapping with AFS Client.
Lab 4. NewsGroups readers and Yahoo Groups
Lab 5. Email: Outlook and Calendar
