College in High School Registration Procedures
Student Information
To earn the college credits, you must be officially registered in the College in High School (CHS) course. To register, you must first be enrolled in the high school course that corresponds to it.
During the first few weeks of the class, your high school teacher will give you instructions and the necessary paperwork to take the class as a CHS course.
Remember: You are not considered registered in the CHS course without paying the tuition and completing the forms.
In addition to the credit awarded by the University of Pittsburgh, most high schools also award high school credit for the course. This is why CHS is called a concurrent enrollment program. Discuss this option with your parents or guardian, as there is a cost involved. They also will need to complete a Parent Permission Form.
To register for a CHS course, do the following:
- Your high school teacher will distribute the application/registration packets for CHS.
- Read all the material in the packet.
- Carefully complete the forms as indicated on the Student Instruction Sheet:
- Application Form (green): Read and complete.
- Parent Permission Form (white)
- Show your parents or guardians the CHS brochure.
- Discuss the program with them.
- Have them sign the Parent Permission Form.
- Course Registration Form (three-part)
- At the top:
- In the boxes at the top left of the sheet, fill in the last four digits of your social security number and your name.
- Check the Undergraduate box.
- Next to the box labeled Spring, fill in "2074."
- In the Primary Academic Program box, write in "A&S College in High School."
- Leave the Primary Academic Program Code box blank.
- In the center, fill in only this information:
- CRN: Leave blank.
- Dept.: Write the CHS course you are taking: MATH, CS, STAT, COMMRC, FR, PHYS, LATIN, or CHEM.
- Course number: Fill in the four-digit course number (such as "0004" for Computer Science 0004).
- Credit hours: Write the number of credits you will earn in your CHS course ("3" or "4").
- At the bottom:
- Sign your name and date at the bottom left.
- Have your teacher sign and date at the bottom right.
- Return all three copies to your teacher—do not keep one. Your teacher will later return the student copy to you, indicating that you have successfully registered.
- At the top:
- Include a check for the amount of tuition. CHS courses are $125 each, except for CHEM 0110, which is $200. The costs are less than 20 percent of the cost of regular University tuition. Make the check out to the "University of Pittsburgh." You must enclose a check for payment with the forms. If you wish to enroll in a CHS course and feel you need help with the tuition, talk to your teacher, or call the CHS office (412-624-6789). Financial assistance may be available for you.
- Give the packet of materials to your CHS teacher.
- After your teacher submits the registration materials, the teacher will receive verification for each student when the registration process has been completed.
