Be a Part of Science2009!

University of Pittsburgh undergraduate researchers are invited to submit an abstract of their faculty-mentored research for consideration for the Science2009 Undergraduate Research Poster Reception. The abstract submission deadline is 18 September. All abstracts should be submitted through the Science2009 Web site. The Undergraduate Research Poster Reception will take place on Thursday, 15 October, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Connolly Ballroom of Alumni Hall as part of Science2009, the University of Pittsburgh’s ninth annual celebration of science and technology.

As a summer intern at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Elham Khatami made the June 8 front page with her article, "Facebook brings big changes to Iran politics." Pitt's Upward Bound Program Makes Way for Students

Housed in the Academic Resource Center in the School of Arts and Sciences, the Upward Bound Program prepares high school students for their future. Upward Bound is a national program that provides low-income first generation college-bound students with a fundamental support in their preparation of higher education. It is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education. More

Three Seniors to Spend Summer in Italy to Research Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso"

Justin Lamorella, Lauren MacLaughlin, and Liz Reali will assist Professor Dennis Looney in a research project on the reception of Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso" in Northern Italy in the 16th century. After spending several weeks in libraries in Modena and Ferrara, the team will move to the town of Mel to study the frescoes (ca. 1545) inspired by Ariosto in its town hall and to work in the local municipal archives on the origin of the paintings. More

Senior Timothy Adamo Wins University Clarendon Fund Award and The Dervorguilla Scholarship from the University of Oxford

After graduating from Pitt this month with a BS degree in mathematics, physics, and psychology, Adamo will pursue a PhD in mathematics at Oxford's Balliol College in England. More

Undergraduates Receive Humanity in Action Summer Fellowships

Sesi Aliu, a sophomore majoring in international affairs and area studies in the University Center for International Studies and French in the School of Arts and Sciences, and Daniel Gore, a junior majoring in political science and history in Arts and Sciences, will participate in the European Programs in Copenhagen and Paris, respectively; Benjamin Mericli, a senior majoring in engineering physics, philosophy, and linguistics, will take part in the American Program in New York City. Arts and Sciences Student James Ostendorf Receives ODK Senior of the Year Award

James Ostendorf, a history and political science major, was one of two Pitt seniors to receive the 2009 Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Senior of the Year Award. ODK, founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., is an honorary society that recognizes students who maintain a high standard of leadership in collegiate activities. The award is given to students who possess and exhibit outstanding leadership qualities in service to the University. More

Senior Aaron Arnold Wins Iris Marion Young Award

Aaron Arnold is one of two activists educated at the University of Pittsburgh who will be awarded a 2009 Iris Marion Young Award for Political Engagement. He is graduating this month with a BA in sociology, a minor in Africana Studies, and a Certificate in the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality. More

Junior Elizabeth Oczypok and Sophomore Andrew Savinov Named Goldwater Scholars

Oczypok, a junior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology, plans to earn a doctorate in molecular biology. Her career goal is to conduct biomedical research and teach at the university level. Andrew Savinov, a sophomore, is majoring in chemistry and molecular biology. His career goal is to earn a doctoral degree in biochemistry and to conduct research in molecular biology/biochemistry and teach at the university level. More

Report Takes Stock of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Writing Instruction

The School of Arts and Sciences has released an assessment of writing in its undergraduate curriculum that its authors hope will provide a basis to "reassess the curriculum and to reassess the appropriate levels of institutional support for undergraduate writing across the disciplines." More

Students Receive Summer Study Abroad Scholarships from the Nationality Rooms Program

Among the students to receive scholarships are Marissa Goldrich, a mathematics and linguistics major who will study the Arabic language and culture in Morocco; Michelle Larzelere, a neuroscience major who will study Spanish for health care practitioners and participate in a clinical internship in Santiago, Chile; and Cory Rodgers, a biology and history and philosophy of science major who will research the interactions and conflicts between Western and traditional medicine in Ulan Bataar, Mongolia. Senior Anthropology Major Katherine MacCord Wins Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Katherine MacCord, a School of Arts and Sciences student majoring in anthropology with a minor in German, has been named a Gates Cambridge Scholar for her exceptional ability and outstanding academic achievement. She is the first Pitt student to receive the Gates Cambridge Scholarship since it was established in 2000 through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. More
