Research Opportunities
Often, the best way to learn about an academic subject or discipline is by participating in it. That's why many of our faculty members welcome students to participate in their research. In addition to departmental research opportunities, the Office of Experiential Learning offers the following research opportunities for undergraduates:
Summer Research Programs
Arts and Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Awards 2009
Arts and Sciences is looking for applicants to join a diverse community of undergraduate scholars and researchers from the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. Awardees receive $3,500 to support a summer term of independent research and scholarship.

First Experiences in Research
First Experiences in Research, offered each spring term, provides opportunities for Arts and Sciences undergraduates to become involved in faculty research projects in the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. Read more about First Experiences in Research
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellows Program (CEIP)
The CEIP Junior Fellows Program is designed to provide a substantive work experience for students who have serious career interests in the area of international affairs. Approximately 8-10 students will be selected to work at the CEIP in Washington, DC on a full-time basis for a period of one year.

The University of Pittsburgh will select three undergraduate students to participate in a poster conference in Harrisburg, Pa., on Tuesday, March 24, 2009.

The School Arts and Sciences’ Office of Experiential Learning will grant awards to 10 A&S undergraduates to pay for transportation, attendance, and lodging at the 23rd National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR®), which will be held at University of Wisconsin—La Crosse, April 16-18, 2009. The Research Abroad Program (RAP)
The Research Abroad Program, co-sponsored by the University Center for International Studies and the University Honors College, gives students the opportunity to conduct research while studying abroad.
Students work closely with faculty members in disciplines ranging from communications to biology. In the past, students have helped promote HIV awareness, update technology in hospitals in Africa, and reorganize and catalog ancient manuscripts in one of Italy's national libraries.
