Hiring an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant

Faculty hiring an undergraduate teaching assistant for credit or for pay are requested to review the guidelines for undergraduate teaching. Faculty who would like to find an undergraduate teaching assistant may participate in the First Experiences in Teaching Program.

Hiring an Undergraduate Research Assistant

Faculty hiring an undergraduate research assistant for credit or for pay are requested to review the guidelines for undergraduate research. Faculty who would like to find an undergraduate research assistant may participate in the First Experiences in Research Program.

Sponsoring an Internship

Students may occasionally approach faculty to supervise the academic portion of their internship. Faculty should review the guidelines for academic internships. Note that the School of Arts and Sciences will only sponsor academic internships and not internships for pay.

Supervising Student Service Learning Projects and Courses

Service learning is a teaching methodology in which students engage in an organized activity that has two goals: to serve a local community organization and to provide a credit-bearing educational experience that directly relates to the goals and objectives of a course within the academic curriculum. Sponsoring a High School Course

Pitt faculty who are interested in sponsoring a College in High School (CHS) course can contact the CHS Director to see whether any participating high schools have expressed an interest in the proposed course. If a participating high school accepts the proposed course, the CHS Director will coordinate the course between the high school and particular Pitt department to arrange the partnership for an in-high school class.

Writing Course Proposals

Faculty planning to write a new course proposal should consult with their undergraduate curriculum committee and their department chair about the need for the new course and how the new course will fit the existing curriculum. The guidelines for writing a new course proposal may be viewed online. Faculty writing proposals for new or existing courses to fulfill a general education requirement (including W courses) should review the guidelines for a new or existing course to fulfill an Arts and Sciences requirement.

Inviting Prospective Students and Families to Class

Faculty who open their classes to prospective undergraduate students and their families pay a tremendous service to the University of Pittsburgh. The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid coordinates a program called “Sample a Class.” Here is the latest schedule.
