University of Pittsburgh Invited to Compete in 86th Annual Glascock Intercollegiate Poetry Contest

02/23/09

Since 1923, Mount Holyoke College has hosted an annual poetry competition in memory of Kathryn Irene Glascock, a promising poet who died soon after her graduation. Participation in the contest is by invitation only. This year, Dawn Lundy Martin, assistant professor in the Department of English, was invited to send a talented undergraduate poet from the University of Pittsburgh. She is sending Kelly Forsythe.

Five institutions in addition to Mount Holyoke will take part in the event on April 17 and 18, 2009. The contestants will be judged by a panel of three distinguished poets. This year, the judges will be Erica Dawson, Rachel Hadas, and Baron Wormser. The contestants will present their poems in a public reading. A first place prize of $300 and a second place prize of $200 will be awarded to the winning poets. Past winners include Robert Lowell, James Merrill, and Sylvia Plath.
