GPS Student Marion Sikora Wins Outstanding Student Paper Award from American Geophysical Union

Marion T. Sikora, an MS candidate in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science, received an Outstanding Student Paper Award from the Hydrology Section of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) for her presentation at the 2008 Fall Meeting in San Francisco.

Her presentation, titled "Nutrient Input and Dynamics in a Restored Urban Stream Impacted by Mixed Sewer Systems," examined water quality and nutrient contamination in Nine Mile Run, a restored urban stream in Frick Park, Pittsburgh, Pa. Her results highlight the importance of examining the role of aging sewer infrastructure in water quality degradation, in addition to the impacts of combined sewer overflows.

The AGU Outstanding Student Paper Awards program recognizes the best of a strong group of students who present at annual AGU meetings and are typically within the top three to five percentile.

Sikora is advised by Professor Emily M. Elliott in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science, and Professor Dan Bain was a co-author on the presentation.
