Chemistry alumnus Peter M. Marone appointed Executive Director of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science (VDFS)

Governor Timothy M. Kaine recently announced that Peter Marone of Henrico County will serve as Executive Director of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science (VDFS). Marone previously served as the Director of Technical Services for the Department. He also served as the Assistant Division Director and Program Manager for the Virginia Division of Forensic Science for 12 years, where he was instrumental in establishing the Commonwealth's DNA Databank program.

Marone received his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. He began his forensic career at the Allegheny County Crime Laboratory in 1971 and remained in Pittsburgh until 1978 when he accepted a position with the Virginia Department of Forensic Science. From 1998 until 2005 he was the Central Laboratory Director with the Department.

He is a member of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD), American Academy of Forensic Sciences, Mid-Atlantic Association of Forensic Scientists, International Association for Chemical Testing, and the Forensic Science Society.
