Style Guide: Publications
Overview
The School of Arts and Sciences has established the following guidelines for use with communications materials and tools coming from departments and programs within the school.
The school works with the Department of University Marketing Communications (UMC) to design and print high quality materials that promote the school’s graphic identity and ensure proper use of the University’s seal and logotype.
University Marketing Communications can assist departments with publications such as:
- Departmental brochures
- Graduate brochures
- Departmental newsletters
- Direct mail campaigns to colleagues at other institutions (for rankings)
- Invitations
- Programs
Publication services include writing, editing, fact-checking/proofreading, design, and printing. UMC can also assist with other marketing needs including market research, advertising, and videos.
Typeface
When producing communications materials such as flyers, announcements, etc., that also include the School of Arts and Sciences graphic mark, it is recommended that either Helvetica or Garamond fonts be used for text. These fonts complement the mark.
Graphic Mark
The School of Arts and Sciences graphic mark was developed to promote a consistent visual identity to the school’s many communities and audiences. Changing the mark or its colors is not permitted.
School publications should incorporate the school’s graphic mark where appropriate, as well as the University of Pittsburgh seal and logotype. One-color publications can use the black and white version of the school mark.

The official University colors are PMS 289 (blue) and 4515 (gold).
The following guidelines for the Arts and Sciences mark need to be carefully followed, in the interest of maintaining the strength of the University of Pittsburgh’s institutional identity:
- The school graphic may not be used on any stationery materials, including letterheads, #9 or #10 (business size) envelopes, and business cards.
- The graphic may be used on such materials as posters, fact sheets, oversized envelopes, brochures, note cards, tickets, mailers, banners, and specialty items like mugs and shirts.
- Any letterhead-size (8-1/2 x 11” or 9 x 12”) sheet that utilizes the school graphic may not be initially printed with, or later imprinted with, detailed contact information that will for all practical purposes turn it into letterhead—address, phone, fax, e-mail, and Web address. The sheet may, however, be printed or imprinted with a single contact item, such as a Web address or phone number.
- The graphic may not be used on the same side of any printed page of material as the University of Pittsburgh logo/seal. However, the words University of Pittsburgh must appear on the same side of a page as the school graphic.
- It is important that the juxtaposition and size of the graphic and the University of Pittsburgh signature are never such that the University of Pittsburgh appears to be subordinate to the graphic. In other words, no one looking at a printed sheet should come away with the misconception that the University of Pittsburgh is contained by, or is a part of, the school.
- The Arts and Sciences graphic has been carefully planned, developed, and crafted, and has been approved for specific uses. The graphic should not be altered in any way, including distorting the scale horizontally or vertically, changing the colors, moving elements of it into different positions, placing it on a complicated background, containing it within another design, or any other means of alteration. Doing so may lessen the impact of the graphic’s meaning and could result in a negative or inappropriate representation of the school.
Note about the Pitt Seal and Logotype (Signature)
The Pitt seal and logotype is under the oversight of University Marketing Communications, and UMC staff is available to answer any questions regarding proper usage. University policy provides for UMC to approve all artwork that includes any University trademarks—including the seal and logotype—and also for UMC to handle the printing of all projects using any of these marks.
The correct way to reference the School of Arts and Sciences and a department with the Pitt seal and logotype is as follows:

For additional information about correctly using the seal, contact Bill Young at 412-624-4209 or wky@pitt.edu.
Photography
Professional photography is highly recommended for school and department publications. If you need professional photographs taken for a publication, contact University Marketing Communications or the Center for Instructional Development and Distance Education (CIDDE) at 412-648-9870 or www.cidde.pitt.edu/photo/.
To use any photographs on Web sites or in communications materials, a photo consent form should ordinarily be signed by anyone identifiable in a photo. Photo consent forms are available on the Office of General Counsel Web site at www.ogc.pitt.edu/forms.html.
